The role of the Scrum Master
The Scrum Master is responsible for ensuring Scrum is understood and applied by the Scrum Team.
To do this the Scrum Master must firstly understand and appreciate the rationale behind the theory of Scrum. In addition the Scrum Master must be able to confidently apply the practices and rules that make up the Scrum process framework.
The Scrum Master's role is one of a servant-leader in service to the Development team, Product Owner and the wider organisation that interacts with the Scrum Team.

- Coaching the Development Team in self -organisation and cross-functionality
- Helping the Development Team to create high-value products
- Removing impediments to the Development Teams progress
- Facilitating Scrum events as requested or needed
- Coaching the Development Team in organisational environments in which Scrum is not yet fully adopted and understood.
Service to the Product Owner
- Finding techniques for effective Product Backlog management
- Helping the Scrum Team understand the need for clear and concise Product Backlog items
- Understanding product planning in an empirical environment
- Ensuring the Product Owner knows how to arrange the Product Backlog to maximise value
- Understanding and practicing agility
- Facilitating Scrum events as requested or needed.
Service to the wider organisation
- Helping those outside the Scrum Team understand which of their interactions with the Scrum Team are helpful and which are not
- Helping everyone change these interactions to maximise the value created by the Scrum Team
- Working with other Scrum Masters to increase the effectiveness of the application of Scrum in the organisation.
