Details of Professional Experience
PRINCE2
Paul has been involved in Project Management for 30+ years. This started off with some formal training at University and then "learning by necessity" from colleagues and experimentation. Certifications followed with PMP (see below) and then PRINCE2. Paul gained Registered PRINCE2 Practitioner certification 8 years ago and has been a Registered PRINCE2 trainer for the past 6 years. Along with delivering more than 50 exam based courses Paul has been delivering tailored training based upon PRINCE2 including using a PRINCE2 Lite approach. When he is not training Paul is active in providing project management coaching and support to organisations and from time to time runs actual projects himself.
Managing Successful Programmes (MSP)
Paul has taken on programme management roles over the past 20 years. Like many people his projects became large and complex with many sub-streams and the need to manage change, stakeholders and benefits. Before receiving formal training and being certified as a MSP Practitioner 7 years ago Paul was starting to apply the disciplines inherit in successful programme delivery. In a consulting role Paul has been assisting organisations to setup and run their projects. This includes developing the MSP artefacts around visioning, goals, benefits, stakeholders, programme plans and governance and also providing coaching to Programme Managers. As a trainer Paul has delivered more than 20 exam based courses and a number of application courses in MSP.
Management of Portfolios (MoP)
Over the past 15 years Paul has worked on various aspects of portfolio definition and delivery. One of the key questions he has assisted organisations to answer is "do we have the right mix of projects and programmes" in order to achieve our strategies and objectives. The second key question has been how are we delivering to the portfolio. In this area Paul has worked with organisations to have the management capabilities in place to achieve this.
Better Business Cases (BBC)
Paul has been developing business cases to underpin projects for a decade or more. This initially followed a "what works best" approach and then was informed by the guidance of PRINCE2 and MSP. BBC gives far more structure to the approach in determining the best option to meet the business need and Paul has been using this to support his project and programme consulting experience. Along with this Paul has been providing review services to business cases. As a trainer Paul has delivered more than 15 exam based courses in this field.
Change Management
As a programme and project manager Paul has been faced with the dilemma of "will magic happen" or do we need to actively manage this change? As a result Paul has worked within his customers business to facilitate a structured approach to changing the ways things are done and order to get the results and benefits required. Key to his approach has been working with the business to identify ways to facilitate change. Paul brings this experience to his change management training delivery.
PRINCE2 Agile
AgilePete and Paul had earlier developed their own integration of PRINCE2 and Agile entitled PRINCESS. PRINCE2 Agile largely confirmed the work they had done, added more details and a certification. Paul's consulting practice has been focused on "making it work for the customer" and one of these approaches has been to have "agility" within project management disciplines. As a PRINCE2 Agile trainer Paul is in the unique position of demonstrating the practical approaches to integrating PRINCE2 and Agile.
PMI/PMP/PMBoK/CAPM
Paul has been a PMP of good standing since 2012. Paul has taken PMBoK and applied it to his project management practice since then. This has included lightening, tailoring and adding relevancy to the PMBoK approach. Paul views PRINCE2 and PMBoK as complementary and uses a "best of both" approach to ensure a robust and informed approach to project management.
