Details of Professional Experience
Project Management
Geoff has been involved in Project Management for almost 40 years. He has established and managed many projects end-to-end, and rescued several troubled projects, using a PRINCE2 framework. Geoff is a Registered Practitioner in PRINCE2, and has re-registered twice. He began using PRINCE2, 15 years ago, introducing it into the largest Government Department in the State of Victoria.
Initial exposure to standard methods was through the methods of Ernst and Young and IBM. Formal study of project management began as part of a Masters degree. Certifications followed with PRINCE2 and then an Advanced Diploma in Project Management, where the required evidence of competence was demonstrated from the records of three projects run under a PRINCE2 framework. Geoff was one of the trainers most actively working in New Zealand when NZ Government decided to adopt PRINCE2. Geoff has also delivered PRINCE2 training in Botswana when UNDP adopted PRINCE2 worldwide, and in Hong Kong.
Geoff was a member of the PRINCE2 2009 Review Group; he is recognised in the current PRINCE2 reference manual as a contributor.

Agile
Geoff began using agile techniques in the early 1990s in software development projects, but now sees agile as a flexible approach useful in many domains and circumstances, not just in ICT Projects. When agile took off in Australia, he became a Certified Scrum Master, and a member of the Scrum Alliance. Geoff then became certified in AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile. He has used agile techniques to develop the scope and plans for projects and programmes.
Programme Management
Geoff has helped establish major programmes, such as a telecommunications infrastructure replacement programme, using an MSP management framework. He has rescued troubled programmes in areas such as Defence OHS and drug control.
Geoff is a Registered Advanced Practitioner in MSP, and has reregistered twice. He began using MSP in 2003 to establish a Corporate ICT Programme in the largest Government Department in the State of Victoria.
Geoff developed and delivered the first MSP course in Australasia. He has trained staff in Government departments, major commercial organisations, and Tier 1 and Tier 2 consulting firms in the MSP approach to programme management.
Geoff was a member of the MSP 2010 Review Group; he is recognised in the current MSP reference manual (published in 2011) as a contributor.
His most recent programme consulting role was to develop the organisational structure for a complex $600 million telecommunications infrastructure replacement programme. He recently helped to rescue a $160 million business process reengineering programme within a major Australian Federal Government Department.

Better Business Cases
Geoff has been developing business cases to underpin programmes and projects for more than 25 years. This initially followed the approaches used in ASX 50 and Federal and State Government, and then was informed by the guidance of PRINCE2 and MSP. Geoff reviewed BBC when it was first released outside the UK, and viewed it so highly that he established the first BBC Accredited Training organisation in the world.
Geoff was a member of the Gateway Review team which assessed the Business Case for a national firearms registration system development project.
Geoff is a Registered Practitioner in Better Business Cases, MoV and Managing Benefits.

Management of Risk
Geoff has been undertaking risk assessment of programmes and projects for more than 30 years. This initially followed the approaches used in ASX 50 and Federal and State Government, and guidance from AS/NZS 4360 (now ISO AS/NZS ISO 31000) and then by the guidance of PRINCE2 and MSP. Geoff became a Certified M_o_R Practitioner when M_o_R was first released.
Major risk-related activities conducted by Geoff include risk review of a $400 million prison cell refurbishment programme in the State of Victoria, and risk review of a $25 million helicopter maintenance tender response. He also provided risk training to the IT Risk Group within ANZ Bank.

Other P3 Guidance
Geoff was applying most of the elements of the US-based PMI’s PMBoK before it was originally published. He has also adopted the guidance of the UK Association of Project Management’s APMBoK and its Guide to Governance of Project management into his practice. He is familiar with the Competency Standard for Complex Project Managers developed by the College of Complex Project Managers, and the IPMA’s Competency Baseline.
Geoff has an Advanced Diploma in Project Management, and has been recognised as a Certified Practicing Project Director. Both of these schemes are based on guidance from the PMBoK.
Geoff views PRINCE2 and the PMBoK as complementary and uses a "mix and match" approach to ensure a robust and pragmatic approach to project management. He doesn’t believe any organisation can choose between these approaches, as they have different focusses and audiences, and most projects need elements of both methods. Geoff has developed detailed comparisons between successive versions of PMBoK and PRINCE2; the latest report compares PMBoK 4th edition with PRINCE2:2009. The methods have continued their convergence, and Geoff was well pleased to note the introduction of references to governance into the latest version of the PMBoK.
Geoff was a member of the Standards Australia working group that provided Australian input into the development of ISO 21500 Guide to project Management, which is based on guidance from PMBoK, APMBoK, PRINCE2, MSP and other methods.
