Change Management

Dealing with change and more importantly, the impact of change is a high priority for all organisations. It is said that change is the only constant in business, and perfecting the art of change management can be a challenge in any organisation. Being able to develop and implement effective change initiatives is paramount to ensuring ongoing business success.

Change Management Overview

The Change Management Certification has been developed by APMG in partnership with the Change Management Institute (CMI), an independent, global professional association of change managers. Together they have developed a professional ‘body of knowledge’ for the discipline of change management. This body of knowledge now provides an independent benchmark for the professional knowledge expected of an effective change manager.

The Change Management Institute

The Change Management Institute (CMI) is a global, independent, not-for-profit organisation set up in 2005 to promote and develop the profession of change management.  In response to a need for standards, the CMI launched the Change Management Practitioner Competency Model in 2008. This has been regularly updated every two years. In 2013 CMI published the “The Effective Change Manager / Change Management Body of Knowledge (CMBoK)”. Informed by international research and peer review, the CMBoK describes and defines the knowledge required for a change manager to practise effectively across a wide range of situations. ​

The Effective Change Managers Handbook and the Change Management Body Of Knowledge 
This course is based upon "The Effective Change Managers Handbook".  This handbook is written by a wide range of international experts and this combined knowledge fully covers the "Change Management Body of Knowledge".  The examination body is APMG who have also published the handbook.

Why Change Management 

Change management is an emergent profession that no one set out to invent. It simply emerged because of needs. The rapidly changing demands on organizations in the latter part of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st placed a premium on effective organisational change management.

Success in delivering organisational change initiatives has been patchy at best, and research has begun to identify the range of factors that predispose an initiative to succeed. A need has become clear for people with a particular range of knowledge and competence to help organisations apply these insights effectively.

Change Management  Application in Aotearoa/ New Zealand

APMG International is a leading international examination institute that accredits training and consulting organizations using a meticulous assessment process, and manages certification schemes for professionals.  This is the same organisation who launched and managed the Foundation and Practitioner certifications for PRINCE2, Managing Successful Programmes, Better Business Cases etc.

“The Effective Change Managers Handbook” has been developed as a collaborative exercise between APMG and CMI.  APMG then went on to develop a curriculum, examinations and vanilla course materials.  

Geoff Rankins from Inspiring Projects has then taken all of this material and developed an online and classroom course covering all of this material and preparing you for certification.  Geoff has developed all of our courses including online and classroom courses for PRINCE2®, Better Business Cases TM ​and M_o_R®. He has also developed classroom and self study course for MSP®, MoP®, MoV®, P3O®, AgilePM and Managing Benefits.

Geoff takes his 40 years of professional experience, combined with his broad knowledge base and explains integrated concepts in clear and simple ways.  All of this is apparent in the Change Management course.

Not Just Formula Delivery

We provide a full online course which takes candidates through the full Change Management curriculum.  The course provides information, with graphics, exercises and exam practice.  At the completion of the course the exam is taken online as well.  We have well above average exam pass rates for both the online and classroom options at 99% for Foundation and 90%+ for Practitioner.

The course is broad and covers a huge range of concepts.  The following sections gives you a small snapshot of some of these concepts:

Change and Transition

Initially an “Engineering” approach to change was used i.e. we change a thing and people will start to use it.  An example of this may be building a new bridge further up the river and demolishing the old one.  People will have to start using the new bridge because, unless they want to swim, there is no alternative.

People are different and for some the engineering approach doesn't necessarily work.  We need to engage with them, win hearts and minds and allow them time to make the transition.

Elizabeth Kübler-Ross developed a model of how people deal with change and grief which is now expressed in the change curve:-

The key message for change management is people go through stages and need time.  Change leaders acknowledge this and work with people wherever they are at.  

Kotter - Eight Steps

The Eight Step model developed by John Kotter based upon his analysis of many change initiatives over a 15 year period.

A summary of what the 8 steps are about is:-
  • Establishing a sense of urgency is about creating climate where a majority of the employees and virtually all the top executives believe that change is absolutely essential.
  • Creating the guiding coalition is about identifying and engaging an influential and diverse skillset to drive a change.
  • Developing a vision and strategy is about describing the future in a way which people identify and engage with.
  • Communicating the change vision is about using multi-channel/multi-approach to really get the message out there.
  • Empowering employees for broad-based action is about engaging employees who feel they want to make a difference to make the change happen.
  • Generating short-term wins is actively finding demonstrators of success and making them happen.
  • Consolidating gains and producing more change is about sustaining and embedding change and continuing to drive forward.
  • Anchoring new approaches in the culture is about visibly promoting and enhancing the new culture.

Course Options

Project Results offers both online and classroom-based Change Management Foundation and Practitioner courses. Both fully prepare candidates for the APMG exams.

Online Course

Our online course is totally self-explanatory and guides candidates through the materials before taking the candidate through the course curriculum itself.  It is not a repackaging of a classroom course but a specifically designed online course.  It has audio, visuals, quizzes, exercises and exam style questions.  Candidates are free to progress at their own pace and to move around sections as they please.
Key to the process is the physical copy of the “The Effective Change Managers Handbook” which is the definitive guide on Change Management.  We also provide you with a physical copy of “Inspiring Projects Change Management Quick Reference guide” and copies of the  APMG sample Foundation and Practitioner exams.

Active support is provided by Paul giving up to 4 hours of one-on-one support to cover concepts and specific knowledge areas.
Once you have completed the course and the requisite exam practice you can sit the online Foundation and/or Practitioner exams.  Note that you must complete the course before you can sit the exam and you must pass the Foundation exam before you can sit the Practitioner exam.  Once you have registered you have 12 months to complete your course and the requisite exams.

We have well above average exam pass rates for both the online and classroom options at 99% for Foundation and 90%+ for Practitioner.

​If you choose the online option you can commence within 48 hours of registration.  You then study at your own pace, with support from us, and complete the exam online as well.  You can take up to 12 months to do this.
