Change Management Course Format

With Project Results you have the option of online, classroom or blended (online Foundation and classroom Practitioner).  We offer a public classroom schedule in Wellington and in-house classroom training at any New Zealand location.  All of these options fully prepare candidates for the APMG exams.
Our Change Management courses are certified by the examination body, APMG International.  This certification covers the Change Management content as well as preparation for the Foundation and Practitioner exams and the quality of the trainers (for both the classroom training and online course support).
Change and Transition
The course is broken into two components.  Change Management Foundation and Change Management Practitioner.  The Foundation course gives you a complete overview of the method and passing the exam will give you the Foundation qualification.  The Practitioner course gives you a more in-depth application of the method and upon passing the exam you can call yourself a "Change Management Registered Practitioner"
The classroom Foundation course is 3 days long and Practitioner another 2 days.  This makes a total of 5 days if you want to do both.  A similar time commitment is required for the online course (see below).

Online Course

Our online course is totally self-explanatory and guides candidates through the materials before taking the candidate through the course curriculum itself.  It is not a repackaging of a classroom course but a specifically designed online course.  It has audio, visuals, quizzes, exercises and exam style questions.  Candidates are free to progress at their own pace and to move around sections as they please.
Key to the process is the physical copy of the “The Effective Change Managers Handbook” which is the definitive guide on Change Management.  We also provide you with a physical copy of “Inspiring Projects Change Management Quick Reference guide” and copies of the  APMG sample Foundation and Practitioner exams.

Active support is provided by Paul giving up to 4 hours of one-on-one support to cover concepts and specific knowledge areas.
Once you have completed the course and the requisite exam practice you can sit the online Foundation and/or Practitioner exams.  Note that you must complete the course before you can sit the exam and you must pass the Foundation exam before you can sit the Practitioner exam.  Once you have registered you have 12 months to complete your course and the requisite exams.  Time commitments are similar to the classroom course with the expectation of 3-4 days of study for Foundation and 1-3 for Practitioner.

We have well above average exam pass rates for both the online and classroom options at 99% for Foundation and 90%+ for Practitioner.
For more details see our Pass rates and certification page.

The following sections give the structure of the classroom course which is simular to that of the online course.

Foundation Structure and Content

Foundation Structure

Once you register for the course you are sent the “The Effective Change Managers Handbook” manual and pre-course exercises and uniquely the full online course.  At least 10 hours work prior to the course is highly recommended.  This pre-course work is one of the key reasons for or high success rates.

The Foundation component gives you the full Change Management curriculum and is delivered through presentations, discussions, exercises and exam practice.  The course is intensive, running from 8:30 to 5:00 with a recommended additional 2 hours of exam practice each evening.

We also have our own exam style questions and there are two sample exams supplied by APMG.  We provide you with copies of all the course material and quick reference guides.  The exercises are scenario based which not only prepares you for the the exam but also real world application of Change Management.

For more information on what is included please click on our Project Results Best Practice Courseware page.

Foundation Exam

At the end of the 3rd day participants sit a 40 minute Foundation exam, following which you are given your preliminary result (subject to confirmation by APMG).  The exam is closed book and with 50 questions each worth one mark.  You must correctly answer 50% to pass.

Aims of the Foundation Course

The Foundation course is intensive but over the 3 days you will be given a complete understanding of the method.  At the end you will sit the Foundation exam, demonstrating your understanding.  Key areas you will have covered include:-
  • The key drivers of an organisation’s culture and recognize different types of change processes.
  • The human side of change and know how to help people deal more effectively with change, maintaining their commitment and bringing them successfully through the change process.
  • How individuals are impacted by change, different ways they may respond to change situations and how learning processes help them adapt.
  • How organisations work, how the process of organisational change occurs and the typical roles that collaborate to deliver successful change.
  • The important aspects of how to build and equip a change team to improve effectiveness.

Who should attend Foundation

Our courses are designed for those leading, managing and supporting organisational change initiatives, including:-
  • Senior Managers: Executives, Directors.
  • Programme, Project and Business Managers.
  • Change Leaders and Managers.
  • Business Change Managers and Change Agents.
  • Business Analysts.
  • Development and Planning Managers.
  • HR and Organisational Development Practitioners.
  • Consultants and Facilitators.
  • Individuals aspiring to become Change Managers.
  • Those seeking certification in organisational change management.

Foundation Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for the course but as stated above we do recommend you complete the pre-course work.

Pass Rates

Here's the really good news.  We have well above (industry) average pass rates in both Foundation and Practitioner.  Our Foundation 7 year (what we have achieved over the past 7 years of course delivery) pass rate currently sits at 99%.  For more details see our Pass rates and certification page.

Practitioner Structure and Content

Practitioner Structure

You will be given the Practitioner courseware at the end of the Foundation course or upon registration (if you have already completed Foundation).  You can then get straight onto practising the APMG sample exam, which is homework for the first night.

While other providers just focus on passing the exam we have an equal focus on applying Change Management.  To do this we have both exam practice and scenario based exercises with the complexity and nuances inherent in real life projects (so no rote answers).  The first day focuses on on the scenario and you work through a number of exercises.  This is done in small groups and as a whole class.

Towards the end of the first day we start to focus on the exam.  We cover all of the question types and set candidates up for over night exam practice.  At the beginning of the second day we go through queries  and clarifications from the previous nights work.  The remainder of the second morning is both individual and group exam practice.

Practitioner Exam

The Practitioner Exam is a 2 ½ hour open book, scenario based, multiple choice exam.  It is open book with you being able to use the The Effective Change Managers Handbook.  There are 80 questions each worth one mark.  You must correctly answer 40 (50%) or more marks to pass.  The exam is marked electronically and participants receive their result in less than a week.

Aims of the Practitioner Course

The 2 day Practitioner course builds on your Foundation understanding and develops your ability to apply Change Management in different project environments as well as to adapt it to specific project scenarios.

The Practitioner training will enable you to:-
  • Identify organisational drivers of a change initiative and the links with governance structures.
  • Apply an appropriate process framework to help plan and understand organisational change.
  • Use a range of organisation paradigms to understand, support and sustain change processes, taking account of the culture of the organisation.
  • Establish a clear framework of roles, skills and activities through which leaders from different levels can support and sustain the change process.
  • Build a change team.
  • Help prepare people for change.
  • Support the identification of and mapping of stakeholders and help develop approaches to build and maintain engagement.
  • Draft the communications plan for a change initiative.
  • Recognize signs of resistance to change and propose actions to mitigate it.
  • Propose a range of levers by which a change can be sustained and become embedded in the organisation.

Who should attend Practitioner

Practitioner training is for those who require a more in-depth understanding in the application of change management and the associated professional recognition.

Practitioner Prerequisites

APMG requires that candidates for the Practitioner Exam must have previously passed the Foundation Examination and with our excellent pass rates you shouldn't have a problem with this.

The other good news is that if you are not ready for Practitioner you can complete Foundation now and Practitioner at some later stage.  You can also book Foundation in one course and come back and do Practitioner another.  We don't charge you any extra to do it this way.  To learn more about the relative merits of this  click on All at once or split and also our No penalty pricing.
